Dunn Lumber

2013 CEA Outstanding EmployerIn business for more than 100 years with 11 stores scattered throughout Western Washington, Dunn Lumber prides itself on customer service and the dedication of its employees. Some of these employees are people with disabilities. Nearly a decade ago, the Normandy Park location contacted SKCAC Industries and Employment Services to see if there was someone with a disability who could work at the store. SKCAC identified Craig as a good fit and he has been working at the location ever since.

Craig works about 22 hours per week, Monday through Friday. When he first started, an SKCAC representative shadowed him for a few weeks. Craig is in charge of dumping recycling and garbage cans at the site and also keeps products on the shelf looking neat and clean.

The other employees and Craig have a good relationship. They make sure that Craig is included in all the store activities and they consider him “just another guy doing his job.” Craig seems to really enjoy his job and loves interacting with people. The customers who shop at the Normandy Park site all know and really like him. In fact, Craig has had such an impact on the customers that they gathered money and surprised him with own custom shopping cart, complete with a laser-engraved emblem displaying “Craig’s Cart.”

Normandy Park store manager, Kelly Fox, says it’s very easy for companies to include people with disabilities in their business. He encourages businesses to contact other employers and placement agencies to see who would be a good fit. Fox says it’s a very worthwhile and rewarding experience.
